Professional audio teleconference controller app

Biamp
Biamp’s enterprise-grade A/V systems include teleconferencing capability, but customers wanted a simple and inexpensive way to control this feature.
Instead of building a dedicated controller device, Biamp opted to create an iOS controller app. Customers love how setting up a teleconference is as easy as making a call on their mobile phone.
THE CHALLENGE: BRIDGING MOBILE AND A/V EXPERTISE
Biamp already employed a world-class team of DSP and software engineers, but they lacked expertise in the mobile space. Our team bridged the gap with experience in both mobile development and connected apps. Biamp shipped us their Audia and Nexia hardware, and within a few hours we were controlling their teleconferencing features over the network.

We follow an ironclad rule: always start with the most difficult portion of the project. Before touching the user interface, we developed and verified all of the hardware communications code. We engineered the app to anticipate and gracefully handle every possible error condition without skipping a beat or confusing the user.
FEATURE HIGHLIGHTS
EASY DIALING

Dial numerically or
from your contact list.
CALL CONTROLS
Controls included for hold,
mute, and end call.

LEVEL CONTROLS
Adjust microphone and speaker levels.
HARDWARE CONNECTION

THE PROCESS: DESIGNING FOR HUMANS
The most important insight was seeing past the control system functions and realizing that, to the user, this was just a phone. We designed the app to work as much like a cell phone as possible. This included showing only the controls necessary in each context, using the iOS contact list, and handling all system commands implicitly based on the user’s intentions.

The result was an exceptionally clear and simple user experience which avoided the complexity of competitors’ hardware-based controllers.
"People increasingly want to use devices like the iPad in the office.
The Dialer App gives users the ability to take their contacts with them,
to quickly initiate and control a conference call wherever a Biamp conferencing product is installed."

THE RESULTS: AN AWARD-WINNING APP
Industry acclaim
The most exciting result: Biamp won the prestigious AV Technology Magazine award for Best New App For Controlling A/V Systems, presented at the InfoComm 2012 conference.
Complete audio solution
More importantly, Biamp filled an important hole in their product line,
giving their customers and integrators yet another reason to stick with
Biamp products across their entire A/V installation.
